Women’s golf hosts ICON Invitational from Monday

HUMBLE, TX – The University of Houston Women’s Golf continues its spring season by hosting the ICON Invitational at the Golf Club of Houston, beginning Monday morning.

Teams will play 36 holes beginning with an 8 a.m. tee shot Monday, with the final round beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the 6,342-yard, par-72 course.

Fans are invited to the tournament, which is free and open to the public.

Under Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Gummthe Cougars will face the Seniors Ariana SaenzSenior Annie-Kimsecond Nicole Abelarfreshman in red shirt Brooke Morales and senior Maria Jose Martinez.

Second year Delaney Martin and freshman in red shirt Anna Economon will compete as individuals.

Saenz posted three consecutive rounds under par at the UCF Challenge Feb. 6-8 in the Cougars’ spring opener and leads the team with six or fewer rounds of par this season.

This season, Kim leads the Cougars with an average of 73.27 and is tied for second among the Cougars with five rounds of par or better. The Seoul native finished tied for fourth at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational from October 4-6, 2021.

Martinez finished in the top 20 after shooting 70-69 in the final two rounds of the Schooner Fall Classic September 25-27, 2021.

Morales and Economon will make their collegiate debuts at the ICON Invitational after award-winning prep careers. Both missed the 2020-21 season as redshirts on the program.

The Cougars will face student-athletes from Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State, Mississippi, North Texas, Oklahoma State, Purdue, TCU, Tennessee , Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State and Texas Tech.


After the ICON Invitational, Houston will compete in MountainView Collegiate at MountainView Country Club in Tucson, Arizona from March 18-20 before taking part in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic from March 25-27 at UGA Golf Course in Athens, GA.

From there, the Cougars take their first step into the playoffs when they compete in the American Athletic Conference Championships, which take place April 17-19 at Pinehurst #6 – Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina. .
