Sam Thompson completes Ironman to support deaf children

An Ironman competitor raised money for a cause close to his heart and took on the grueling 70-mile challenge for the first time.

Sam Thompson was among those who took part in the super triathlon last weekend – a 1.2 mile swim in Weymouth Bay, a 56 mile bike ride through the Dorset countryside and a 13.1 run miles.

He completed the challenge in seven hours and 30 minutes.

Sam, who runs an outdoor adventure business in Swanage and lives in Weymouth with his wife Yasmin and their children Obi, 3, and Iris, 1, raised money for the National Deaf Children’s Society.

It has exceeded its original fundraising target of £1,000, with more than £1,400 raised so far for the charity, which supports the UK’s 50,000 deaf children.

Sam chose to run in support of the National Deaf Children’s Society because both of her children were born deaf and the family receives ongoing support from the charity.

At the end of the Ironman challenge, Sam said: “It was very emotional and a huge relief to cross the finish line. It was my very first triathlon, let alone an Ironman. I was tired, but as soon as I finished it all went away and I was proud of myself and my efforts. Hugging my family and holding my children with my medal will be a feeling I will never forget.”

He added: “We all have to face obstacles at one time or another, but the important thing is to remember that they can be overcome. I will raise my children to be confident and proud of their deaf identity, so they can pursue all their hopes, wishes and goals.

“The National Deaf Children’s Society will continue to be an integral part of our lives as we navigate life with our two deaf children and I am grateful to anyone who is able to donate to support the fantastic work they are doing. for families like mine.

Melissa Jones, from the National Deaf Children’s Society fundraising team, added: “I want to congratulate Sam heartily for taking on – and overcoming – this tremendous challenge for us. We are so proud of him.

“The National Deaf Children’s Society is dedicated to supporting the UK’s 50,000 deaf children and their families. The efforts of selfless fundraisers like Sam will help us continue to do our vital work, now and in the future.
