Houston teams up with H-Town legends Bun B, Paul Wall and XO for intro football video


Cougar-themed track “Red Alert” unveiled at TDECU Stadium on Friday

HOUSTON– The University of Houston Football Program and Houston Athletics have announced a partnership with Houston artists Bun B, Paul Wall and XO to write and produce the song “Red Alert” which will serve as the music for the intro video of the football team for the next season 2022. .

The song was unveiled Friday night as part of a live performance at Cage Rage, the Houston Athletics’ annual cheer rally and celebration event for University of Houston students, marking the sending off the college football season. The chorus features the melody of “Womp Womp”, a staple performed by The Spirit of Houston and adopted by fans during games.

“I’m very proud to represent my alma mater,” Wall said. “Being able to do a fight song/theme song for my school is extremely sentimental.”

The video was directed and filmed by Houston Football’s creative team and produced by Houston Football Assistant Director of Creative Media Adrian Romero and edited by the director of Creative Video Darrell Grant.

“I’m thrilled to see the Cougars run their business this season, and even more excited to be a part of it,” Bun B said. “It’s all about baby Cougars!”

“No greater feeling,” XO said of his involvement with the project. “I’m from Houston, so I’m honored to be a part of this moment. Thank you for the opportunity. Now let’s get to the ship!”

It’s been well over 25 years since Bernard Freeman – better known to the world as Bun B – changed the hip-hop landscape as one half of the legendary UGK alongside the late Pimp C. A lot has changed in the over these two and a half decades. While the Grammy-nominated duo collectively delivered six classic albums and two EPs, Bun cemented his status as a solo warrior with five projects that embodied his Port Arthur, Texas mantra to keep him trilling. When Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017, Bun was at the forefront of recovery efforts, bolstering his philanthropic contributions. From selling millions of albums, to Grammy nominations, to evolving academia, publishing, sneaker, food and car culture, and philanthropy, he doesn’t there’s not much Bun B hasn’t done.


Paul Wall has been a consistent leader in Texas Hip Hop for 20 years. As a student at the University of Houston, Paul made a name for himself selling his mixtapes, which led to him signing a recording contract with Atlantic Records and a Grammy nomination. Paul Wall is also world famous for selling personalized diamond encrusted jewelry for your teeth, known as grillz.


Houston Spirit is an umbrella term that stands for the official University of Houston spirit groups. The Spirit of Houston Marching Band was established in 1947, rising to prominence as the University of Houston and its athletic programs began to flourish. The group has 250 members and regularly entertains listeners at football games, parades and concerts, among other forums.
