Houston receives academic recognition from USTFCCCA

HOUSTON – The University of Houston track and field program was recognized for academic excellence by the American Association of Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches (USTFCCCA) on Thursday afternoon with the announcement of its 2021 academic awards .

Nine men and nine women have been recognized as 2021 NCAA Division I All-Academic athletes and the men’s and women’s teams have been named All-Academic programs.

The All-Academic distinction is awarded to athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.25 and ranked among the top 96 in the NCAA in their respective event during the indoor track season or to participants in any round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. There were over 850 men named on the list and over 1,100 on the women’s side. To be an All-Academic team, a program must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Several Houston track and field athletes are currently set to compete in Tokyo at the Olympics which will take place from June 23 to August 8. UH will be represented by Brianne Bethel (Bahamas), Tristan Evelyne (Barbados), Mario Burke (Barbados) and Shaun Maswanganyi (South Africa).

Brianne Bethel, Tristan Evelyne, Mario Burke, Shaun Maswanganyi and Micaela Bouter are all set to compete in their first Olympic Games.
