CSD Unites Community Foundation looking for new partners to support the proliferation of marginalized deaf communities

The Foundation invests in the essential and necessary work done by nonprofits serving Deaf communities and plans to work with other funders to ensure that grantmaking is accessible to all.

AUSTIN, Texas, September 21, 2021 / PRNewswire / – The CSD Unites Community Foundation, a division of the Deaf Communications Service, is looking for foundation leaders to collaborate with in efforts to strengthen and support Deaf communities across the country. The Foundation, one of the only deaf-led grant providers in the country, aims to work with like-minded community foundations committed to justice for people with disabilities. This involves ensuring that funding processes are accessible to heads of Deaf organizations and providing direct access to funding opportunities in multiple languages, including American Sign Language.

“Despite the thousands of philanthropies and grant providers available, many are not accessible to deaf communities,” said the newly appointed executive director of the Foundation, Sasha Ponappa. “Unlike leaders of organizations without disabilities, Deaf leaders face an often lost battle for language access to opportunities such as grant applications, training and networking. They are forced to choose between accessing funds to grow their organizations or focus on the survival needs of their staff and programs. It is a difficult choice to make.

The Foundation believes in a future where Deaf communities have access to a wide range of services provided by successful and well-endowed organizations. Organizations that choose to partner CSD Unites Community Foundation Benefit from a team of dedicated staff to ensure that their experience of requesting, receiving and using grant funds is as seamless as possible.

The Foundation is currently accepting applications for capacity building grants from nonprofit organizations that support Deaf communities. This opportunity offers grant recipients up to $ 25,000 to build the capacity of their organizations and support long-term sustainability. This year, the Foundation was able to set aside $ 100,000 contribute to the grant.

Applicants benefit from membership in a unique network of nonprofit organizations, all striving to advocate for their respective Deaf communities. In an unprecedented push to raise accessibility standards, organizations can submit applications in American Sign Language, English, or Spanish.

“Funding from the Foundation allows us to expand our reach so that more people can benefit from our services and expertise and share and celebrate the unique experiences, rich culture and resilience of new Americans. the deaf and hard of hearing. ,” noted Diana pryntz, executive director of Advocacy for deaf refugees and recent recipient of a grant.

To continue supporting non-profit organizations serving deaf communities, the Foundation accepts donations all year round. Funding for Foundation grants comes from a combination of donations from community members, contributions from the CSD Employee Giving Program and the Foundation’s growing endowment fund. Those who cannot donate money are encouraged to share and raise awareness on the Foundation’s efforts with their friends and family.
