In many ways this story is very much part of the story of No Straight Lines that I have been researching, evolving and developing over the last 7 years. You can find out more about No Straight Lines here and pre-register for the free browser book, or indeed lets us know if there are other formats of the project you are interested in.

Marcin’s story is at a very human level, but it also asks big questions about ‘WHAT NEXT’ looks like, economically and, organisationally. His story is about questing for a more sustainable and enduring world, something that Gabriel Branby also talked about.

Marcin asks the What If? question, but he is one of a growing band of people, and these questions are pushing harder and currently deeper into the consciousness of our everyday lives. and I think Marcin is a trailblazer but he is also connecting up to and creating an entirely new eco-system, a ‘human operating system‘ that wants to get stuff done in very different ways.

As Tony Judt argued in Ill Fares the Land, why is it that we struggle to imagine a different world to the one we currently have, when that world could be built upon a philosophy of a more humane sense of the world we live in?

Intersections Creative Business Summit as I was listening to a Radio4 programme about one of Cornwall’s famous sons Peter Lanyon (Tate St. Ives Bio),Lanyon took up gliding as a pastime and used the resulting experience extensively in his painting, The Tate explains, Lanyon talked about exploring vertiginous edges such as ‘the junction of sea and cliff, wind and cliff, the human body and places. In the Radio4 programme one of his sons remarks that if there was an edge or any sort Peter Lanyon found it.

This was synchronous because Intersections was exactly about the same thing – but within a different context, how design thinking can come to the aid of social innovation and also the commercial world, resulting in business transformation by exploring emerging trends in technology and design. The summit also turned its gaze to, sustainable design and the environment, as well as social design and collaborative practices. Because it is when two unlikes come together in close adjacency, creating an edge and an intersection real creativity happens.

I met some great people. I second Michael Thompson in congratulationing Andrea on becoming Associate Director of the Academy for Innovation and Research (AIR) and Head of the <a

Here is my presentation for those that asked for it. #intersect

Do Lectures guys and gals write, Jay Rogers is a modern day Henry Ford. He is going to change the car industry. He has created a community company that will spark a revolution in this capital and time intensive industry. He is changing both things with a revolutionary approach to the industry. Can David beat goliath? Can a crowd beat a corporation? Jay believes they can.

I have to say I don’t think I have ever met such a driven individual whose sense of mission is so crystal clear and a lovely man to boot. Whilst many talk about this stuff, Jay has gone and done something to see if its possible. Today I will be speaking at Incubate 2.0 and Local Motors will be part of my story – it as NSL (No Straight Lines) approach to solving life’s seemingly intractable problems. Why is it NSL? Because Local Motors combines, not just the buzzword of the moment “co-creation” and “social media”, but; legal frameworks, a blended reality of online and offline engagement in R&D, design, engineering innovation, sales and marketing. Using low cost media and communication capability to make that possible and to reach and harness the collective intelligence of many people.

And perhaps what really attracts me to Jay, and people like Jay, is their passion, their desire to make the world afresh, to be bold. what we can learn from Jays company – many things I would argue. All SME’s should study Local Motors in understanding that taking a NSL approach to finding a sustainable solution without compromise would be well worth the time and the effort. More on No Straight Lines project is picking up apace (sxsw keynote) (Do Lecture) (Latin America tour – to come). As a consequence of the work I have been doing with a small team, we have identified that the connected and networked world presents a design challenge to existing companies but also to entrepreneurs – how business and entrepreneurship is taught and how it can be accelerated. The rise of networked platforms like GrowVC which are designed to unleash innovation via crowdfunding is but one example. Another is Local Motors, or indeed mobile developer communities which are bringing a different type of rocket fuel to the party. (also see dotOpen)

On 17th November I will give a keynote on No Straight Lines at Incubate 2.0 on business creation and organization – as what is clear to me, that the networked world must be addressed not through social media per se, but a much deeper and broader understanding of the networked and its implications. For example, how does one leverage open social systems, global connectivity, open innovation and its implications from a skills, tools, process and legal frameworks, and, lightweight (green) business practices to create companies in the future? We need to design and build smart organisations, and understand mutuality as a business model.

The benefits of designing the smart organisation, coupled with the smart business model – purpose built for the needs of 21st Century culture and commerce gets us to ask these types of questions:

How does a company decrease the cost to build a car 100 fold whilst also halving the time in development?

How does a company perfectly match supply and demand?

How does a company use its employees to achieve business and commercial success greater than a $billion ad campaign?

How does a fashion retailer make €83m from mobile phone sales?

How does a company achieve a 29%+ response rate to its marketing with the subsequent uplift in sales?

How does a company spend $60,000 and get a $45m return?

How does a hybrid business model of [1] Freemium [2] Subscription [3] micropayment work to generate significant revenues?

From an incubation perspective – incubation has been done traditionally within a space and mostly as a real estate play or an economic development play. Now there are virtual groups allowing and enabling rapid flows of information to be created and shared – networking simultaneously with the creation of multinational micro-corporation, with funding provided by crowds. I argue, the way to start a business today is by being networked, and the way to run these businesses is networked (which is more efficiently done when it was conceived in a networked environment than when you have to transition from a straight line business).

The Do Lectures 2010

Convergence

Economics

Engagement Civil Society

Engagement Education

Engagement Marketing

Engagement Mobile

Engagement Organisations

Engagement Politics

Generation C

Government & Politics

Green tech

Music

Social Marketing Intelligence

Social Networks

Society

Strategy

Trends

Web/Tech

Age of Engagement+SMLXL

Alan Moore+SMLXL

Co-creation+Communities

Co-creation+education

Collaboration+Education

Community Engagement

Diversity+Education

Education 2.0

Education+Engagement

future of automotive engineering

future of design

Future of Music

future+education

future+newspapers

Gransfors Bruks+gabriel branby+Do lectures

inspiration+innovation+co-creation

Mark earls+gerd leonhard+euan semple+paula le dieu+matt webb+ed stafford+alex haw+bill drummond+david spiegelhalter+darina allen+daniel seddiqui

nepal

Networked Society

No straight lines+innovation+creativity

Open Innovation

Participation+Co-creation

Politics+civil society+ethics

sustainability+economics+culture+technology+media+participation

the do lectures

more Do stuff), and though I will not be able to make it this year, I wanted to share my enthusiasm for the 2010 event. There is a great speaker line up - which is designed to do what it says on the tin – to inspire people to go and do something with their lives.

Also I might add – The Do Lectures is an event that is cross disciplinary, and brings in my view an alternative view of how we make business, art, love and life in this networked world. And it is this diversity that makes the experience so rich and rewarding. It is the rule of No Straight Lines vs. the straight line one. As Proust said, the real voyage of discovery is not to seek new landscapes but to look upon the world with fresh eyes.

So from the future of publishing presented by Craig Mod, to John ‘Jay” Burton Rogers from Local Motors, Maggie Doyne building schools in Nepal – these are people as Ivan Illich says are leading a life of action. So unlike other events, if you want inspiration, and hang out with some great people, where speakers sit and have breakfast with you, lunch with you and dinner with you and chat, where you talk to others that have asked the question, ‘why?’ what comes next? What is the alternative, where you will be moved – then Do is the place for you. <a
