Pioneers tend to get shot

December 18th, 2005

Is the world catching up?

I was told the other day I was a Pioneer – which, I was told was a double edged compliment because pioneers tend to get shot.

well – I have just got back from the Nordics and had some very interesting conversations – and I’m not dead yet. :-)

I noticed in the FT on wednesday December 14 in the Technology section a piece entitled Participation is the latest watchword (though you have to pay to subscribe to the FT online) by Steve Prentice VP and Chief of research at Gartner.

Prentice says

Participation is the new buzzword, as growing numbers of individuals ? empowered by rapid technological change ? are starting to take advantage of the back-channel to wrest the control which many feel has been taken from them

Prentice then says

All this represents a tremendous shift in power compared with the inward focused corporate models of the past

Which is why Rupert Murdoch bought read here and here and here myspace.com ? Not because of content and not because of contolled distribution. But because of the participatory flows of information and communication between communities.

Nice to know the world is catching up. But what I want to know is – Am I still in line to get shot?
