Skype’s Challenge

July 1st, 2005

Skype: who? Unlike most “voice over Internet protocol” networks, Skype is a peer-to-peer system, creating ad-hoc telephone links over the Internet whenever people want to reach one another. No central networks mediate or manage the connection. And many of its calls are free. Since its debut in August 2003, Skype has signed up 35 million users, and it is making inroads at large global enterprises — for good reason. While IT and telecom managers try to avoid Skype at all costs, the new service may ultimately compel changes in the way corporations communicate.
